Agarwood is a fragrant resinous wood that is highly prized for its distinctive aroma and use in perfumery, traditional medicine, and religious ceremonies.
Agarwood is produced by certain species of trees belonging to the genus Aquilaria, particularly Aquilaria malaccensis, Aquilaria agallocha, and Aquilaria crassna.
These trees are native to Southeast Asia, including countries like India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Agarwood is formed when the Aquilaria trees are infected with a specific type of mold (Phaeoacremonium parasitica) or attacked by insects.
In response to this attack, the trees produce a resinous substance called oleoresin, which gradually saturates the wood, resulting in the formation of agarwood. The process of agarwood formation can take several years.
